This Halloween we had more trick or treaters than we have ever had. The costumes were of the usual variety with my favorite being a little girl dressed up as one of the Three Musketeers. The older and wiser I get, the more these customs become less childish and more of something to ponder. For example, why is it that we feel comfortable handing out candy to strangers but yet we don't feel comfortable handing out job leads to fellow job seekers?

Halloween is traditionally a holiday where people put on masks and enjoy stepping into the shoes of a character unlike themselves. Those who are angels in real life can become devils for the day and those people who are shy or timid can become a superhero. You're probably wondering how this has anything to do with job resumes. According to the Wiktionary, the word "flexible" is defined as "willing or ready to yield to the influence of others; not invincibly rigid or obstinate; tractable; manageable; easy and compliant." According to Abby, being flexible will score you all sorts of points with recruiters and hiring managers, but being too flexible can cause you trouble down the road.

For many people, public speaking is their greatest fear. It even beats the fear of dying for some people. Based on those rankings, I wonder whether the fear of cold calling a single prospective employer ranks higher than speaking in front of a large audience.
