Mock Interviews Without the Mocking Print

We've all heard the expression that practice makes perfect. That expression could not be more true when it comes to interviewing. A first interview is very similar to a first date. Two people are trying to evaluate whether they should take their relationship to the next level or end it once and for all. Both events cause anxiety about what to say, what to wear, and how to act. When you are dating, you practice over and over again. So shouldn't you practice interviewing too? Absolutely!

Interview Nerves Be Gone! Print

If you think that regular one-on-one interviews are the most intimidating thing on the planet, you clearly have not yet experienced the group or the video conference interview. I'll bet that one day we'll look back and laugh at how primitive our interviews styles were as we watch our robots do it all for us. Don't laugh – George Jetson didn't.

Let’s say that you’re a hiring manager at a TV network and you are trying to choose between three qualified candidates for a receptionist position. Candidate A has 7 years of experience as a receptionist at a bank; Candidate B has 3 years of experience as a receptionist at a medical device company; Candidate C has 12 years of experience as a receptionist at a competing TV network. Who would you hire?

Good Timing Is Key Print

One of the worst things that can happen to you on your big day is to be late for your interview. It will add a heightened level of stress to your already anxious state.

Always plan to be in the general vicinity of your interview at least 30 minutes before it is scheduled. For those of you who believe time is infinite, shoot for an hour before. If you’re driving, try a dry run the night before to make sure that your GPS won’t get you lost (blaming your GPS works a lot better than blaming yourself). If you’re train-ing or bus-ing or boat-ing or ferry-ing, add a bunch of extra time for the passenger who will undoubtedly choose the day of your interview to get sick. You can thank Murphy and his Laws for that.
